Stena Line is offering at least four departures every day, but during the busy summertime, up to eight departures is possible. The specific departure times is shown, when searching for a booking on a specific date.

Three different ferries are used on the route between Frederikshavn and Gothenburg. The two main ferries are Stena Jutlandica (shown on the photo above) and Stena Danica. From the end of April to the end of August, the catamaran ferry Stena Line Express is also sailing on the route – but with passenger cars only.

The scenic experience from the ship when sailing from Frederikshavn to Gothenburg in Sweden is limited, and there are no tax free sales on board, since both Denmark and Sweden are members of the European Union. However, many Swedish tourists come to Frederikshavn on short weekend trips to relax, shop and have a good time in Frederikshavn. Many Danish tourists also travel to Gothenburg to enjoy shopping and the many attractions in the second largest city in Sweden.

Stena Line also operates the ferry route from Grenaa in East Jutland to Varberg in Sweden, which can be an alternative to the Frederikshavn-Gothenburg route.

The Kalundborg-Aarhus ferry is the classic connection by ferry between Zealand and Jutland.
Ferry reservation Kalundborg-Aarhus – online booking

The route between Kalundborg and Aarhus was taken over by Kattegat Ruten in 2011, when Mols-Linien stopped operating the route. There are up to three daily departures from Kalundborg to Aarhus, Monday through Friday – see the specific departure times below.

When choosing Kattegat Ruten, the crossing time is a little longer, than the similar crossing time by competing Mols-Linien, which operates the ferry route from Odden to Århus. But when including the transport time by car from Copenhagen to Aarhus, the total travel time getting from Copenhagen to Aarhus is about the same. The fares for cars and walking passengers at Kattegat Ruten is often a bit lower, than the similar standard fares at Mols-Linien.

Kattegat Ruten operated a fast ferry during the summer of 2012, Dolphin Jet. But because of tight restrictions to the speed of the ferry in Kalundborg Fjord, Dolphin Jet was taken out of operation in the middle af August 2012. At the moment MF Kattegat is the only ferry on the route.

The Grenaa-Varberg route is operated by the passenger ferry Stena Nautica, which is a combined passenger and freight ferry. The facilities on board Stena Nautica include restaurants, cafe, cinema, shopping, lounges, a playroom for children and cabins used for night crossings.

Grenaa is located on the tip of the peninsula Djursland in Eastern Jutland, and the Grenaa-Varberg route is especially popular in the summertime among Swedish tourist from the Swedish provinces of Halland and Skåne that spend some days in Eastern Jutland and for instance visit Legoland in Billund.

Stena Nautica is sailing two double tours every day year round with departures from Grenaa at 14.25 and a night departure at 01.00 am. But in the high season from mid June to mid August, Stena Nautica departs from Grenaa at 13.15 and 23.50. The specific departure times is shown, when choosing a date in the online booking.

An alternative to the Grenaa-Varberg ferry could be the ferry route from Frederikshavn to Gothenburg, also operated by Stena Line.

The island of Samsø right between Zealand and Jutland is connected with the Danish mainland with two ferry routes: One from Zealand and one from Jutland. The route from Zealand departs from Kalundborg and arrives in Kolby Kaas on the southern part of Samsø.

Ferry reservation Kalundborg-Samsø – online booking

The crossing time from Kalundborg to Samsø is 1 hour and 50 minutes. The ferry departs Kalundborg three times a day in June, July and August and two times a day the rest of the year. However around public holidays, the ferry departs up till three times a day.

On most days during the year the ferry departs Kalundborg at 09.35 and 18.05. However, the late departure time changes during the summer. The accurate departure times are shown, when a specific date is chosen in the online booking dialogue.

During the summertime, reservation is recommended for car travellers, because of the limited capacity on board the ferry. The ferry on the route is MF Kyholm, which can carry up to 96 cars.

The ferry on the photo above is Kanhave on the ferry route from Jutland to Samsø. This route between Hou in Jutland and Sælvig on the west coast of Samsø is the busiest of the two ferry routes to Samsø with several departures every day.

Samsø is a very popular island for tourists during the summertime, thanks to its many picture square small towns and the beautiful landscape. Samsø is among other things well known for its strawberry fields and new potatoes – and the fact that the island gets 100 % of its electricity from wind power, thanks to an offshore wind farm south of Samsø with 10 big windmills.

The island of Samsø right in the middle of Denmark – located half way between Jutland and Zealand – is connected with the mainland via the ferry route from Hou in east Jutland to Sælvig on the west coast of Samsø. The crossing time from Hou to Samsø is one hour.

Ferry reservation Hou-Samsø – online booking

The ferry route from Hou to Samsø is one of two ferry connections to Samsø. The other ferry route to Samsø connects Kalundborg and Kolby Kaas. Kalundborg is located on the west coast of Zealand and Kolby Kaas sits on the south coast of Samsø.

The ferry route from Hou to Sælvig is operated by the ferry MF Kanhave on the photo above. The ferry was built in 2009, and has cut down the crossing time between Jutland and Samsø with 15 minutes to one hour sharp. There is up to seven daily departures from Hou to Samsø – most during the summer and fewer in the wintertime.

Even though that the ferry can carry up to 86 cars, reservations are recommended when travelling to Samsø during the summer. In July and August a smaller passenger ferry is also sailing between Hou and Kolby Kaas. However, this ferry only carries passengers and bikes but no vehicles. The crossing time on the Hou-Kolby Kaas route during the summer is 1 hour and 10 minutes.

Samsø is a very popular island for tourists during the summertime, thanks to its many picture square small towns and the beautiful landscape.
The crossing time across Kattegat is 45 minutes on the Odden-Ebeltoft route. The catamaran ferries can carry regular passenger cars only, but no trucks or trailers. The ferry route from Odden to Ebeltoft is part of highway 21, which crosses Denmark from Copenhagen to Randers on an east-western route.

Taking the ferry from Odden to Ebeltoft can be an alternative to using The Great Belt Bridge and drive across Funen. However, be aware of that the fact, that the amount of departures from Odden to Ebeltoft are very limited outside the summer season.

Mols-Linien also operates a ferry route from Odden to Aarhus, which can be an alternative, if the Odden-Ebeltoft route is not operated.

Another way to get across Kattegat by ferry is the ferry route from Kalundborg to Aarhus, which was operated by Mols-Linien until 2011. The route has now been taken over by ferry company Kattegat-ruten. Kalundborg-Aarhus is mostly a freight route, but do also provide transportation for passenger cars and walking passengers.

Mols-Linien has recently acquired a new big ferry, which will be set into operation in beginning of May 2012 on the Odden-Aarhus route.

The Odden-Aarhus route is the most busy ferry route across Kattegat, and Mols-Linien offers several departures from both Odden and Aarhus every day. On the busiest travel days during the summer season, Mols-Linien offers hourly departures.

The ferry route from Odden to Aarhus is operated by two catamaran ferries. A new and even bigger fast ferry than the present two ferries is on the way, and will start operating in the middle of May 2012. The present ferries can only carry regular passenger cars and smaller vans and trailers, but the new fast ferry can also transport trucks and busses. The crossing time from Odden to Aarhus is 70 minutes.

Copenhagen and Odden is connection by Highway 21, which for the most part is motorway and two lane expressway. However, when arriving in Aarhus, you arrive more or less in Downtown Aarhus. So if Aarhus isn’t your destination, and you want to avoid driving through the downtown area and save time, consider using the Odden-Ebeltoft route instead.

When choosing the Bøjden-Fynshav ferry, you can save about an hour, compared to taking motorway E45 across Funen and motorway E20 through South Jutland. The costs are more or less the same – the cost for fuel used for driving compared to the ferry ticket. Another benefit by using the Bøjden-Fynshav ferry is the possibility to relax for 50 minutes – the crossing time by ferry across southern part of The Little Belt.

The Bøjden-Fynshav ferry is operated by the ferry company Færgen, which uses the ferry Thor Sydfyen on the route. The ferry departs Bøjden or Fynshav every second hour – on the hour. However, in the daytime during the summer, two ferries operate the Bøjden-Fynshav route with hourly departures. The Bøjden-Fynshav route was operated by Scandlines a few years ago, and the photo above is from the Scandlines days.

The Bøjden-Fynshav connection is part of Highway 8 from Nyborg on Funen to Tønder in the south western corner of Jutland. Highway 8 is mostly a two lane highway, but a very scenic one. Especially the part across the south of Funen contains plenty of scenic beauty crossing though woods and passing close by several big manor houses and the very popular and famous Egeskov Castle. Expect about one hour of driving time when driving from Nyborg to Bøjden on Highway 8.

The Spodsbjerg-Tårs ferry connects the southern regions of Denmark divided by The Great Belt. The ferry from Spodsbjerg on the island of Langeland makes it possible to take a shortcut from Funen to Lolland and Falster and further on to Zealand or Germany.

Ferry reservation Spodsbjerg-Tårs – online booking

Crossing The Great Belt from Spodsbjerg to Tårs – or the opposite direction – takes about 45 minutes, and is done aboard the ferries Odin Sydfyen (above) or Frigg Sydfyen, that offer hourly service in the daytime all year long. The ferries depart both Spodsbjerg and Tårs at 15 minutes past the hour. In the summer of 2012, two new ferries are expected to go into service between Spodsbjerg and Tårs.

The Spodsbjerg-Tårs ferry is a vital part of Highway 9 between Odense on Funen and Nykøbing Falster on Falster. Highway 9 is motorway between Odense and Svendborg on Funen, but from Svendborg to Spodsbjerg across the islands of Tåsinge and Langeland, Highway 9 is a two lane highway with a lot of traffic, so expect at least 30 minutes of driving time from Svendborg to Spodsbjerg on Langeland.

This section of Highway 9 is by the way quite scenic and crosses two of Denmark’s big bridges, The Svendborgsund Bridge from Svendborg to the island of Tåsinge and The Langeland Bridge, a classic arch bridge between the small island of Siø and Langeland. Highway 9 on Lolland is also for the most part a two lane highway, but the majority of the Highway 9 on Lolland is straight as an arrow with hardly any small towns and a 90 km/h speed limit.

On very rare occasions when The Great Belt Bridge was closed due to falling ice from the cables on the tall bridge, the Spodsbjerg-Tårs ferry was the only connection between east and west Denmark – together with the ferry routes across Kattegat between Jutland and Zealand.

The ferries on the Ystad-Bornholm route are the fast ferries Villum Clausen and the brand new ferry Leonora Christine from 2011, which crosses The Baltic Sea from Sweden to Bornholm in just 1 hour and 20 minutes. However in rough weather during the winter months, the regular ferry M/F Povl Anker is used as a backup ferry. The crossing time will then be 2 hours and 30 minutes.

The driving time from Copenhagen via The Oresund Bridge to Ystad in Sweden by car is 60 minutes, making it possible to get to Bornholm in just two and half hour by car via Sweden.

When using the train from Copenhagen, Intercity Bornholm, in combination with the Ystad-Rønne ferry, you can get to Bornholm in just three hours from Copenhagen. Another possible connection is Bornholmerbussen (bus number 866), which leaves from Copenhagen Central Station and arrives about 70 minutes later at the ferry dock in Ystad before the ferry leaves for Bornholm.

Taking DFDS Seaways from Copenhagen to Oslo is a lot more than just transportation from A to B. The two ships on the route, Crown Seaways and Pearl Seaways, delivers a cruise experience for the passengers on board with several restaurants, bars, pubs, a night club, entertainment, swimming and spa facilities and lately also a casino – and not to forget, tax free shopping, thanks to facts, that Norway is not a member of the European Union.

Book ferry tickets Copenhagen-Oslo

The Copenhagen-Oslo route is one of the oldest ferry routes in Denmark, dating more than 100 years back, where flying was not an option. But DFDS Seaways have kept the route alive by turning the Copenhagen-Oslo route into a travel experience, where you besides getting from Copenhagen to Oslo, also gets a unique mini cruise experience on board.

Crown Seaways and Pearl Seaways have been upgraded several times, and offer a variety of dining possibilities, from elegant a la carte dining in the Blue Riband Restaurant or the Marco Polo Gourmet Restaurant over a steakhouse experience to the family friendly buffet restaurant, 7 Seas – the best shot for families with younger kids. For the adult passengers without kids, wine tasting or beer tasting is an option, and the latest offer for the adult audience is the new casino on board both ships. Different kind of entertainment for kids on board is also part the DFDS experience.

DFDS Seaways offer several kinds of cabin classes for passengers: The standard class is called Seaways Class or Seaways Class Comfort, while a more luxurious experience with hotel standard is found in the Commodore Class or the Commodore De Luxe Class. All cabins regardless of class are equipped with a private bath and toilet.

Enjoying the trip from Copenhagen to Oslo is a pleasure itself, not a least the trip though the Oslo Fjord, either in the morning when sailing from Copenhagen to Oslo – or in the afternoon, when sailing from Oslo to Copenhagen.

Crown Seaways or Pearl Seaways leaves Copenhagen and Olso every day at 16.45, and arrives the next morning at 9.30. DFDS Seaways arrives in Oslo at Vippetangen, which is within walking distance from Downtown Oslo. The DFDS terminal in Copenhagen terminal is located in Nordhavn not that far away from Østerport Station in north part of Copenhagen. But taking a shuttle bus to the DFDS Terminal in Copenhagen is recommended, if you’re not bringing a car on board.

The Rødby-Puttgarden ferry is transporting cars and trains across the Femern Belt from Denmark to north coast of Germany. The ferry route is by far the most used ferry connection from Scandinavian to Germany, and in the daytime, no less than four ferries is sailing forth and back non-stop. That means that a ferry leaves Rødby every 30 minutes. The route is operated 24 hours a day.

The Rødby-Puttgarden ferries is part of the so called “Vogelfluglinie” (Danish: Fugleflugtslinie) – a nickname for the transport corridor between Denmark and Germany across Lolland and Falster to the German Island of Femarn. The ferry route was opened in 1963, together with new railway lines and motorways in both Denmark and Germany.

However, a new connection to replace the ferries between Denmark and Germany is being planned, probably in shape as an 18 kilometre long tunnel including motorway and railway under the Fermern Belt, scheduled to open in 2020.

Right next to the little village of Rødby, you will find Lalandia, one of Denmarks largest resorts with more than 400 summerhouses and smaller units plus a big water park (Aquadome), restaurants, bars, a cinema and a variety of sports activities as well as playgrounds and other recreational activities.

The present ferries on Gedser-Rostock ferry route are the former ferries from The Great Belt, before The Great Belt Bridge was opened in 1998. But in 2012, Scandlines will insert two brand new ferries on the route, which means shorter crossing time and more departures from Denmark and Germany.

At the moment, the crossing time between Gedser andRostockis 1 hour and 45 minutes. The ferry departs Gedser on the hour every second hour at 7.00 – 9.00 – 11.00, etc. The Gedser –Rostock ferry operates 24 hours a day.

Stena Saga is the largest passenger ship in the Stena Line fleet with room for more than 2.000 passengers and up to 510 cars. The ferry offers a variety of different restaurants, bars and other kind of entertainment on board. One of the major attractions on board is the possibility to shop tax free, which can be done since Norway is not a member of the European Union.

The Frederikshavn-Oslo ferry is extremely popular among Norwegian tourist, visiting Denmark in the summertime. In the winter months, the traffic goes in the other direction, when many Danes head to Norway to enjoy the skiing in the Norwegian mountains.

One of the highlights by sailing to Oslo is the beautiful trip through the narrow but deep Oslo Fjord, where you can enjoy views of the rocky Norwegian landscape on both sides of the ferry. The Stena Line Terminal in Oslo is located at Vippetangen, just a short walk from Downtown Oslo.

Besides Stena Lines route from Frederikshavn to Oslo, Color Line and Fjord Line is operating ferry routes from Jutland to Norway. Color Line is operating the Hirsthals-Larvik and the Hirtshals-Kristiansand routes, while Fjord Line is operating a summer route from Hirtshals to Kristiansand and the all year route Hirtshals-Stavanger-Bergen.

Crossing the waters of Skagerak between Denmark and Norway takes 3 hour and 15 minutes with the new catamaran ferry build in 2007. The ship can take 750 passenger cars and 2.315 passengers.

A Color Line specialisation is the fact that you need to book seating in one of the lounges on board Superspeed 1, if you want to be sure about, that you can actually sit down on your way across Skagarak. No other ferry company in Denmark is charging people to sit down.

However, when booking a seat in advance in one of the lounges, you can sit down in comfortable fly chairs with access to radio and free movies on a private screen. On board the Superspeed ferries, the cheapest class is The Voyager Class, while The Business Class Lounge in targeted at the business segment. Besides the lounges, restaurants, a cafe and tax free shopping is available on board.

Color Line is running its own radio channel in Hirtshals with traffic updates and other kind of information in Danish, English and German. The station can be found at FM 95,3 MHz when arriving in Hirtshals.

The Hirtshals-Kristiansand ferry route is the only one in Denmark with two ferry companies sailing side by side. Besides Color Line, the competing operator Fjord Line is also sailing between Hirtshals and Kristiansand in the summertime with the catamaran ferry Fjord Line Express.

The Hirtshals-Larvik route is an important freight corridor from Jutland to the Oslo area. Larvik is located just 130 kilometres from the Norwegian capital. But the Hirtshals-Larvik route is also used by many Norwegians, especially in the summertime, when people from Oslo are enjoying their holiday in Northern Jutland and other regions of Denmark.

Superspeed 2 is modern catamaran build to cross the sometimes powerful waters of Skagerak – all year long. Only in extreme heavy weather, the ship will have to cease operations. The ship can carry 1.900 passengers and up to 764 passenger cars.

Facilities on board Superspeed 2 include several restaurants, cafes and a four tax free shops, thanks to facts, that Norway is not a member of the European Union. A special thing about Color Line is, that you need to reserve seats on board, if you want to make sure, that you can actually sit down during the crossing. You can choose between Voyager Class, the less expensive option or the Business Class Lounge. Both lounges are equipped with fly chairs with private screens and free entertainment. The business lounge do also offer free internet access, free coffee and soft drinks, free newspapers, ect.

The crossing time is 3 hours and 45 minutes when taking the Hirtshals-Larvik ferry. Color Line normally departures Hirtshals at 12.45 pm and 22.15 – however the specific departure time is shown, when choosing a date in the online booking. When you are arriving in Hirtshals by car, you can tune into FM 95,3 MHz and listen to a special Color Line Channel with traffic info n Danish, English and German.
